Rishad is a partner at the Delhi office of VERUS.He graduated in law from NUJS, Kolkata and has an LL.M. degree from the University of Chicago Law School. He is qualified to practice law in India as well as in New York.

Rishad has wide-ranging exposure to civil, commercial and public law litigation.

He has spent several years in the chambers of Mr. Raju Ramachandran, Senior Advocate, where he has gained in-depth exposure to civil, commercial and constitutional litigation in the Supreme Court. He has also appeared independently in a range of matters before different courts and tribunals, including matters in the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, Competition Appellate Tribunal, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal and Mines Tribunal. He has either briefed Senior Counsel or independently argued in these courts and tribunals, in a wide range of cases. He has also advised clients in a variety of contexts, including existing and apprehended disputes in the realm of company law, contract law, labor and service law, property law, administrative law, consumer protection law, and criminal law. He has authored several academic articles, particularly in the area of constitutional law, which has been published in prestigious Indian law reviews, and has also co-authored a Chapter on ‘Freedom of Expression’ in Comparative Constitutional Law in Asia.

  • Successfully represented the Competition Commission of India before the Competition Appellate Tribunal in a large number of appeals including, amongst others, disputes between travel agents associations’ and foreign airlines, the developer for a large-scale real estate project in Kolkata and various aggrieved purchasers of property & a leading luxury car manufacturing MNC and its dealer.
  • Impanelled as Advocates for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Represented TRAI insignificant matters before the Delhi High Court and the consumer courts.
  • Successfully represented the United Bank of India in a Special Leave Petition filed by Kingfisher Airlines before the Supreme Court, challenging the Bank’s decision to declare Kingfisher Airlines and its Directors as ‘Willful Defaulters”.
  • Represented Kotak Mahindra Bank in several high-stakes commercial disputes before the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court and the Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal.
  • Impanelled as Advocates for the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT). Represented IIFT in several Writ Petitions before the Delhi High Court, as well as in other fora. Extensively advised IIFT on various existing and apprehended disputes with contractors and vendors, as well as on its obligations under various labor legislation.
  • Appeared on behalf of an internet technology Company in several disputes with a onetime Director of the Company. Advised the Company in negotiating an out-of-court settlement.
  • Advised and appeared on behalf of an investor in a contractual dispute relating to non-issuance of shares to the investor by a start-up Company. Advised the investor during settlement talks and in negotiating a settlement agreement with the counter-party.
  • Filed several Winding-Up Petitions before the Delhi High Court (in order to recover large sums of money owed to clients by the concerned Companies).
  • Advised the Indian subsidiary of an international company on risk-minimization strategies for (and the appropriate preemptive action in relation to) possible adverse action by the World Bank as a penalty for past irregularities allegedly committed by the company.
  • Successfully argued an appeal in the Supreme Court against the dismissal of an Election Petition filed by an unsuccessful candidate in an election to the Rajya Sabha for the State of Jharkhand.
  • Advised an association of private colleges affiliated to a leading Delhi-based University regarding disputes with the University in relation to the University’s admission policies. Filed and contested various Writ Petitions before the Delhi High Court in this connection.
  • Advised a private Delhi-based school, and appeared before the Delhi High Court, in relation to an increase in the fees charged by the school, and a regulatory challenge to the same.
